Buying a new computer?

Hi all. I am going to break down and buy a new computer with my income tax money returns as my current laptop is 4 years old and way out of date…it doesn't even have Word, Excel, Access, etc. on it. My questions to you are, should I get a laptop, or desktop, (which would you buy and why?) and should I get the new Windows Vista or keep with my current XP? Any thoughts are welcome, thanks!! PS-I'm already thinking of going with Gateway or Dell as i've gone with them in the past. If I do get a desktop, I want one with lots of memory as I plan on using it mainly for gaming and scanning photos as I like to scrapbook.

Okay, first you have to ask yourself this: are you going to work on your computer outside of the home? If so, you should get a laptop. Otherwise get a normal desktop because it can be upgraded if you ever need things like new memory, a new video card, etc. Laptops cannot be upgraded. Also a desktop is going to be slightly cheaper, and I would not buy an E Machines, because those desktops cannot be upgraded, and if it breaks, it cannot be fixed. I have heard that there have been a huge amount of problems with Vista, so I would stick with XP. I would do some research on Vista to see what the consumer reviews are, etc. Dell is the best by far. Since you are going to be doing a lot of gaming and video stuff, make sure and get a video card especially for the extra oomph. Normal video cards have problems with complicated games. Good luck!

I would go with an asus, they are extremely high quality, and have a two yeat parts and labor warranty.

This in an Asus with a 2.0ghz core 2 duo, 1gb RAM, 120gb hard drive, and the Nvidia go 7700.

Before you buy a new computer try UBUNTU. It's a free, reliable, up to date operating system. You also get all the software (including an excellent office suite OpenOffice). that you will ever need FREE!!!

Hi! I understand you are looking for a new computer, and I have a suggestion for you. I have the MacBook, and it has excellent graphics and picture quality. There is plenty of capacity (I bought mine with extra) so that you can put as many games and photos on as you like. It doesn't come with Word or Excel or anything like that, but right in the Apple store they have a product Microsoft Office 2004 for Mac. It takes a little to get used to the arrangement of the Mac, but once you've had it for about a month you're a pro. Plus, it has a built-in Webcam. I use mine for the same purposes as you: taking and uploading pictures, writing documents and doing taxes, and gaming. Plus, you can watch DVDs, write and download songs, go on the Internet, and SO much more! I really has some awesome features.

It has treated me better than any PC I've ever had.
